Our elementary school years are very important years of our lives. Much of what we learn throughout those curious years shape what we decide to do after high school. Astronaut Jose Hernandez recognizes this importance and inspired students at The Village at Indian Hill Conference & Technology Center in Pomona, CA that anything is possible by sharing his story of following a dream. In his speech he told students “If you ever have a dream, never stop trying,” mentioning how he “applied to NASA twelve times” before being selected.
Hernandez and his family harvested crops in California and moved from one town to another. Still, his dreams of becoming an astronaut was inspired by “working in the fields and looking up at the stars.”In addition he follows the lead of the first Latino in space Dr.Franklin Chang-Diaz. He learned English at the age of 12 and earned his B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of the Pacific in 1984. He was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate in May 2004 and was on a 14 day mission delivering supplies and equipment to the International Space Station from August 28, to September 11, 2009.
