Latinos Growing in the NBA

By Efrain Nieves

Born on May 29th 1984, Carmelo Anthony had a successful high school career at Towson Catholic High School and Oak Hill Academy. He attended Syracuse University where he led the Orangemen to their first National Championship in 2003.  Anthony was drafted in 2003 and selected as the third pick by the Denver Nuggets.

Carlos Alberto Arroyo Bermúdez born July 30, 1979, is a point guard for the Miami Heat. Arroyo is the fifth player from Puerto Rico to play in the NBA. In the 2008-09 season, he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball Super League, winning the league’s championship and being named the final’s Most Valuable Player.

Francisco García, born December 31, 1981, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, currently plays for the Sacramento Kings. A 6’7″, 195-pound guard–forward from the University of Louisville, García was selected by the Kings in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft. He now plays a variety of positions for the Kings, and on September 25, 2008, signed a five-year extension that was worth $23 million.

These men are examples of succesful Latinos in the NBA. One of the most popular sports in the United States is becoming increasingly popular in the Latino home next to baseball. It’s time we pay some attention to these athletes and give credit where it’s due.
