Why I Don’t Drink Soda.

by Efrain Nieves

Soft drinks were never my cup of tea. Drinks like Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Mountain Dew have me power-walking towards the all natural juices section. Wondering what ingredients are in soda, I Googled “Why is Soda bad for you?” Just with the click of a mouse,  I confirmed that there is much more to soda than meets the eye. In fact, soft drinks hazards i.e. phosphoric acids, can lead to long term health problems.

An article on Yahoo! Health states:

Soft drinks contain little to no vitamins or other essential nutrients. However, it is what they do contain that is the problem: caffeine, carbonation, simple sugars — or worse, sugar substitutes — and often food additives such as artificial coloring, flavoring, and preservatives.

Soda contains phosphoric acid which,

can severely deplete the blood calcium levels; calcium is a key component of the bone matrix. With less concentration of calcium over a long time, it can lower deposition rates so that bone mass and density suffer. This means that drinking sodas and carbonated water increases your risk of osteoporosis

I am glad to crave only the natural drinks such as fruit juices.  In my opinion, nothing compares to the refreshing taste of oranges, pineapples, apples, blueberries and the like.  As you may already know, these juices are filled with vitamins and nutrients that our bodies rely to function properly on a daily basis.

Here is a favorite of mine, it is the cranberry-blueberry blend by Fuze. Theirs are naturally flavored drinks that keep me feeling healthy and strong, unlike soda that makes me feel bloated and tired.

Latinos have a wide array of choices when it comes to fruits at “el mercado”, some of these fruits even come from Latin America and are a treat to eat or blend with other favorite fruits. Therefore, I urge you to think healthy and drop that soda can like a bad habit mi gente. Pa’lante!
