Tea Party Express Clubbing

Written by Victoria Cepeda

Tuesday, September 14, 2010 the Primaries elections were in full swing. Many eagerly awaited the results to feel the pulse and attempt to read voter’s mood.

Despite the low voter turnout these facts remain:

  • Republican Primary had a higher voter turnout than Democrats Primary but the night was eclipsed by hard facts. Tea Party members cut away at Republicans’ flanks drawing blood.
  • The most notorious winner goes by the name of Christine O’Donnell of Delaware, followed by Ovide Lamontagne In New Hampshire and Carl Paladino in New York.
  • The night’s true winner though was the Tea Party Express in comparison to the Republicans and Democrats.

Who are the Tea Party Express “TPE” you may ask? Tea Party Express is one of the most recognized national Tea Party organizations, based in Sacramento, California that has become a major player in Republican Party politics, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on ads. One of the early signs of success for them came in January when they endorsed and funded, Scott Brown, for Republican Senate candidate upset Democrat Martha Coakley in a special election to fill the late Sen. Ted Kennedy’s seat. More recently, the organization helped the little-known Sharron Angle win the Republican primary in Nevada, endorsing her and spending about a half-million dollars on ads. Angle will face off Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the top Democrat in the chamber, in the general election.

In addition, the TPE was behind the ousting of Bob Bennett from the Republican Party for having supporting Obama’s TARP program. They have spent millions of dollars backing candidates, some successful, in their bids for public office. Their mega attraction is Sarah Palin whose endorsement has earned candidates such as McCain (R-AZ) and Christine O’Donnell (R-DE) major wins.

In essence, the folks from the TPE are equipped with top dollars; some say the group is comprised of very angry people, read predominantly White males, willing to put their money where their mouths are in order to place politicians that will fight to return America to a level of “normalcy”. Judging by Tuesday night’s results, their funding has spoken loud and clear in Delaware, New York and New Hampshire.

How does the increase in Tea Party ranks translate to U.S. Latinos?

How do you perceive a Hispanic/Latino Tea Party member?

Should we truly be concerned with the rise of an extreme right/Conservative party?

Tea Party Express, Palin also big winners in Delaware
