Breaking the Mold: The New Face of Entertainment

By Efrain Nieves

It is a fact that many of us turn a blind eye to mainstream music talk: after all, we get enough of it from radio, TV and the internet. But this topic is about the beauty of diversity found in today’s music industry. No longer are pop artists, rappers or Latin artists fitting just one mold or look.  All it takes is one glimpse at the difference faces of the younger generation of entertainers here in the U.S.

So without further ado, let us take a look at a couple of our own who are on top.

Miguel Jontel Pimentel known as Miguel has gained popularity with his single “All I Want Is You.”  The track brings a rhythm flow which reminds me of early 90s New York underground hip hop with a R&B twist.  The album, which carries the same title as the single, to his first single, is said to be filled with songs based on true stories of  Miguel’s life. Some of his contributions can be found under big names such as Mary J. Blige, Usher and Musiq. We wish nothing but success for this young Black-Mexican brother.  We hope he keeps sharing his music with us, inspire and pave the way for others like him.

Peter Hernandez better known as Bruno Mars has to be one of the most unique artists in mainstream music today. With seven Grammy nominations, top of the international music charts and certified platinum, this Puerto Rican and Filipino descendant has become a household name. Like Miguel, Bruno has also contributed to known artists such as Alexandra Burke, Flo Rida, Sean Kingston and many more. Bruno’s hard work, versatility and soft vocals have taken him to the top. Cannot wait to see what else Bruno has in store for his fans.

Why am I writing about these two young artists?  Because our people have diversified, adapted and conquered achieved well beyond the stereotypes.  We stretched our dreams of joining mainstream America as entertainers, writers, musicians etc and have not disappointed. These two young brothers are prime examples of our future as a multi-ethnic group. The answers are within our reach. All we have to do is look for the opportunities.

Through our children we achieve for we no longer just wish, we are. Pa’lante!

  1. Very interesting and true, we have diversified for good and more will follow. Love Bruno! And to know he is puertorrican too makes it even better.
