Latina Leaders: Mexican Physicist & STEM Mentor Deborah Berebichez

Every now and then we are very fortunate to meet, or interact, with people of the caliber of Ms. Deborah Berebichez. Her warmth, supportive and humble personality hardly gives away any of her professional and academic accomplishments .

Aside from being the first Mexican woman to obtain a physics Ph.D. from Stanford University she has also excelled in countless of other areas. Ms. Berebichez is the co-host of two science TV shows with National Geographic and Discovery International and has been recognized by the WSJ, Oprah, Dr Oz, CNN, TED, DLD, WIRED and others. She is a physicist, author and Vice President of Risk Analysis at Wall St’s risk firm MSCI.

In addition, Dr. Berebichez has done scientific research in the area of waves and invented highly effective techniques in the fields of wireless communications and nanotechnology. As VP of financial risk at MSCI, she uses her quantitative skills to advise top tier banks and hedge funds on managing portfolio risk. In addition to her work in physics and finance, Dr. Berebichez’ passion is to empower young people to learn science and to improve the state of STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math) in the world. She is leading a new way of educating the public by providing friendly programs that deliver scientific content in easy and engaging ways.

Most recently she is the Global Ambassador for Technovation Challenge to teach hundreds of high school girls from under-served communities how to code science-based mobile apps and create high-tech businesses around them. Deborah was the keynote speaker at Oprah’s National Women in Leadership Conference in NY and has been named a John C. Whitehead Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association. Most recently she won the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) STAR Community Service Award.

Ms. Berebichez attended Brandeis University as a Wien International Scholar where she earned highest honors and Summa Cum Laude in a B.A. in both physics and philosophy, becoming a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honor society. She was an National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in the Applied Physics and Applied Math department at Columbia University and at NYU’s prestigious Courant Institute of Applied Mathematics. She continues to do social service by mentoring and empowering girls across the world.
