NJPAC Features Mexican-American folk musician Sixto Diaz Rodriguez

Sixto Diaz Rodriguez, the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, performs original, compelling songs from his two classic albums this upcoming May 8th at 8:00 PM at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Rodriguez

Born in Detroit as Sixto Diaz Rodriguez, this Mexican-American folk musician and self-taught guitarist often sang of injustices in his home city. His two studio releases, Cold Fact (1969) and Coming from Reality (1971) went unnoticed in the U.S., but gained airplay overseas. Rodriguez was unaware that he had achieved superstardom in South Africa, where anti-apartheid activists and musicians were inspired by his counterculture lyrics.

Rodriguez was earning a bachelor’s degree, running for political office and working construction and factory jobs to support his family when fans in South Africa sought him out in the late 1990s. The story of the unanticipated renaissance of his music career is told in the film Searching for Sugar Man, which has given Rodriguez a new measure of fame in the U.S. and is reaching audiences worldwide.
